Project Pothchinhno: How Hult Prize at Rajshahi University Is Turning the SDGs into Real-World Action

Sustainability is often discussed in air-conditioned conference halls, but at Rajshahi University, it is being defined by the mud on a student’s boots and the weight of a sapling in hand. While the global Hult Prize is famous for its million-dollar ideas, Project Pothchinhno (Footprint) is proving that the most valuable currency in social change isn’t capital, it’s consistency.

Conceived and executed entirely by the organizing body of Hult Prize at University of Rajshahi, this initiative reflects a growing shift in how young people in Bangladesh are engaging with global challenges. They are no longer treating the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as distant ideals, but as local responsibilities rooted in their own communities. This is the Hult Prize stripped of its corporate jargon and repurposed as a “proving ground” for the next generation of leaders.

The work began with the “Green Footprint,” an initiative born from the reality that climate action often remains abstract until it becomes physical. Rather than launching a symbolic one-day campaign, students assumed direct, unglamorous responsibility for the spaces they inhabit daily. Through tree plantation drives and rigorous campus clean-ups, the team confronted the logistics of real-world maintenance, aligning their efforts with the environmental targets of SDGs 13 and 15 while fostering a sense of collective ownership among a once-indifferent students.

As the campus transformed, the project’s focus shifted from the land to the water. Under the banner of “Mission BluePulse,” students travelled to the banks of the Padma River, where clean water is not an abstract right but a daily negotiation. Here, the project moved beyond simple activism and into the realm of ethnography. By listening to riverside communities and documenting the fragile ecosystems they depend on, the team bridged the gap between infrastructure and awareness. Their response, practical informational materials and an authentic documentary, framed river protection not just as an environmental necessity, but as a public health imperative.

However, the most intimate test of the project’s ethical framework arrived with the growing winter chill. “Project Winter Haven” saw students repurposing discarded banners and scrap wood to construct shelters for stray animals across the campus. It was a lesson in the friction of real-world work: shelters required rebuilding, locations had to be moved, and care had to be maintained. By grounding sustainability in everyday compassion, the initiative proved that a truly sustainable community must include its most vulnerable inhabitants, human or otherwise.

What distinguishes Project Pothchinhno from a standard university event is its continuity. These campaigns are not isolated moments of charity; they are a deliberate sequence of “pre-events” designed to inform and strengthen the Hult Prize 2025–26 campus round. The momentum is intentional, leading directly into the main competition where registrations remain open until 16 January 2026. This ensures that the business ideas emerging this year are not born from theory, but from a lived engagement with the streets and rivers of Rajshahi.
Ultimately, Project Pothchinhno demonstrates that meaningful impact is not something that is declared in a pitch deck; it is something that is practiced in the field. The most enduring footprints are not those that announce an arrival, but those that inspire others to join the movement and keep it moving forward.
